Michael Mann Awarded $1 Million in Defamation Lawsuit

Climate scientist Michael Mann has won a defamation lawsuit against former adjunct scholar Rand Simberg and National Review contributor Mark Steyn. The jury found Simberg and Steyn guilty of making false statements against Mann, awarding Mann $1 in compensatory damages from each defendant, and levying punitive damages of $1,000 against Simberg and $1 million against Steyn. The trial centered around blog posts from 2012, where Simberg and Steyn compared controversy over Mann’s climate research to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Pennsylvania State University. Despite this victory, Mann’s attorneys plan to appeal an earlier decision that found the Competitive Enterprise Institute and National Review not liable for the defamation.
