Maui police release 1st report after investigation into response to deadly blazes
The Maui Police Department has released a preliminary after-action report investigating the wildfires that broke out on the Hawaiian island in August 2023, which led to the loss of 100 lives and the destruction of over 6,600 acres. Severe weather and an understaffed police force grappling with unanticipated communication and equipment issues were cited as reasons for the disaster’s extent. This event has been dubbed as Hawaii’s worst natural disaster and the deadliest wildfire in the U.S. in over a century. The report also highlighted the spread of disinformation and misinformation, which added to the chaos and confusion during the crisis. The final after-action report is expected to be released in six to 12 months.
