Many Have Preached Politics From This Pulpit, but Biden Is the First President

Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, prepares for a historic event as President Joseph R. Biden Jr. is set to be the first sitting president to deliver a speech at the church. The church is known for being the site of a racist massacre in 2015, to which former President Barack Obama delivered a eulogy. Biden’s campaign speech is expected to address the threats to American democracy, including political and hate-fueled violence. The church, which has a long history of black resistance, hopes Biden’s speech will re-energize its African American base. The speech is also seen as a move to show a common cause with Black voters, who polls suggest have lost enthusiasm for the president.
