Man who destroyed Satanic Temple altar in Iowa charged under hate crime law

Michael Cassidy, a former Republican candidate for Mississippi’s state House of Representatives, has been charged with a felony hate crime after attacking and beheading a statue erected by the Satanic Temple at Iowa’s Capitol in December. Cassidy, 36, is charged with third-degree criminal mischief in violation of individual rights, according to the Polk County Attorney’s Office. He reportedly told authorities and the public that he destroyed the statue based on the victim’s religion. Cassidy, who lost his bid for the Mississippi State House, described himself as a “Christian conservative” and called the act “Christian civil disobedience.”
