Man accused of firing shotgun outside synagogue in upstate New York is taken into custody, police say
A 28-year-old man was taken into custody following an incident where he allegedly fired a shotgun twice outside Temple Israel, a synagogue in Albany, New York. The suspect, identified as Mufid Fawaz Alkhader by the FBI’s Albany office, was charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person. No injuries were reported from the incident, which took place hours before the start of Hanukkah. The police are investigating whether this was a hate crime, as the accused reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” before firing. The New York Governor, Kathy Hochul, has directed state police and the National Guard to increase Hanukkah patrols following the incident.
