Maine Secretary of State Targeted by ‘Swatting’ After Trump Ballot Decision

Maine’s Secretary of State, Shenna Bellows, was the subject of a “swatting” call, a common malicious act where a hoax call is made to emergency services with the intent of sending a response team to a person’s address. The incident occurred after Bellows barred former President Donald Trump from the state’s ballot, asserting that he did not qualify due to his involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. This decision led to criticism from Republicans nationwide and a series of threats towards Bellows. The swatting incident is currently under investigation, with no arrests made yet. Swatting incidents targeting high-profile individuals have been increasing and are now tracked by a national database formed by the FBI.
