Lt. Ridge Alkonis: Navy officer released from Japanese prison booked into California federal prison

US Navy officer, Lt. Ridge Alkonis, who was imprisoned in Japan for negligent driving causing two fatalities, has been transferred and booked into a federal prison in Los Angeles. The transfer was brought about by direct engagement from Vice President Kamala Harris and national security adviser Jake Sullivan. Alkonis’ case will go before the US parole commission within the Department of Justice, which could take several months to determine his remaining punishment. The Alkonis family argued that he was ill, not negligent, and have claimed violations in the status of forces agreement between the US and Japan. The family has pushed for Alkonis to be allowed to serve his sentence in the US under the Council of Europe Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons.
