A new state-funded migrant shelter has opened in Little Village, Chicago, in a former CVS store. The shelter, the first of its kind in the city, has seen around 100 families move in, with a total capacity of 230. The shelter is being staffed by GardaWorld, which is providing food and maintaining facilities, and social services organization New Life Centers, which is assisting migrants with housing and employment. The shelter’s launch follows the state’s rejection of a city proposal to establish a base camp for migrants in Brighton Park due to environmental concerns. The shelter is part of a broader city strategy to provide temporary housing for migrants using leased buildings and church partnerships.
