LA County captured enough rain this week to provide water to 65,600 residents for a year
During a record-breaking rainfall in Southern California, water managers were able to capture approximately 2.7 billion gallons of stormwater. This quantity of collected water is enough to supply 65,600 residents for a year. In total, about 15,000 acre-feet, or around 4.9 billion gallons of stormwater, were captured for recharge into groundwater. However, facilities like the Las Virgenes Municipal Water District’s plant faced challenges due to the high-volume influx of water, nearly causing an environmental disaster with raw sewage. Water managers are now emphasizing the need to conserve rainfall in anticipation of future droughts and are adjusting to handle higher flow events.
