Judge rejects Trump immunity claim in federal 2020 election case

A U.S. judge has ruled that former President Donald Trump does not have immunity from criminal charges regarding actions he took as president. Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected Trump’s bid to dismiss the case brought by Special Counsel Jack Smith, which accuses Trump of unlawfully trying to overturn his 2020 election loss. She ruled that a presidential position does not confer a lifelong ‘get-out-of-jail-free’ pass. Chutkan’s ruling also dismissed Trump’s argument that the charges infringe his free speech rights under the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. Trump’s trial is due to begin in March.
