Judge hits pause on Trump federal election case over immunity appeal
The federal election interference case against Donald Trump has been halted pending the outcome of Trump’s appeal arguing he’s protected by presidential immunity. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan has put all proceedings on pause but not vacated, stating that future deadlines and proceedings will be reconsidered if jurisdiction returns to the court. The ruling does not affect Trump’s conditions of release, the gag order, or the protective order in the case. Earlier in the month, Chutkan ruled that presidential immunity does not shield Trump from charges that he tried to illegally change the 2020 presidential election results. Trump’s attorneys have urged the Court of Appeals not to expedite the case.
