Judge allows new court in Mississippi’s majority-Black capital, rejecting NAACP request to stop it
A federal judge in Mississippi has allowed the creation of a state-run court in the capital city, Jackson, despite opposition from the NAACP. The Capitol Complex Improvement District Court, which will have jurisdiction in parts of the city, will have a judge appointed by the state Supreme Court chief justice and prosecutors appointed by the state attorney general. The NAACP has criticised the new court, claiming it undermines democracy as the judge and prosecutors will not be chosen by local voters or elected officials. The court is part of an effort to control crime in Jackson, which has had over 100 homicides in each of the past three years. The NAACP intends to appeal the ruling.
