John Whitmire defeats Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in Houston mayor’s race

Democratic Texas state Senator John Whitmire won the Houston mayoral race, defeating fellow Democrat U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee in a runoff. The race proceeded to a runoff after the November 7 general election, where neither candidate won the majority. Whitmire secured 43 percent of the votes, while Jackson Lee got 38 percent. The 74-year-old Whitmire will take the position vacated by Democrat Mayor Sylvester Turner, who reached the term limit. Both Whitmire and Jackson Lee have long-standing political careers in Texas, with Whitmire serving since 1982 and Lee in Congress for nearly 30 years.
