John Kerry Bows Out as U.S. Climate Envoy

John Kerry, President Biden’s special envoy for climate, intends to resign from the Biden administration by spring 2022. During his tenure, Kerry worked to encourage global governments to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, led the U.S. team at three UN climate summits, and promoted cooperation between the U.S. and China, the world’s two biggest polluters. Kerry, who informed Biden of his decision to resign, is widely expected to raise awareness about Biden’s climate change efforts in the 2024 presidential campaign. He has previously been instrumental in convincing President Biden to set more ambitious greenhouse gas emission targets for the U.S. The future of the climate envoy role in the U.S. is currently uncertain.
