Jayland Walker death: Akron police officers didn’t violate policy in fatal shooting, internal probe determines

The Akron police officers involved in the 2022 shooting of a 25-year-old Black man, Jayland Walker, did not violate agency policy and will not face any disciplinary action, according to Police Chief Stephen Mylett. The decision was based on an internal investigation and comes seven months after a special grand jury declined to indict the officers involved. The incident began with a traffic stop and escalated into a car and foot chase. Although Walker was unarmed at the time of the shooting, a gun was found in his vehicle and he allegedly fired a shot during the car chase. Walker’s family has filed a federal lawsuit against Akron and several police officers, seeking at least $45 million in damages.
