Intense coastal storm to drench D.C. area Sunday and Sunday night

A powerful winter storm is expected to hit the East Coast, bringing heavy rain to the Washington region. Winds could gust over 30 mph, potentially causing isolated power outages. The storm is expected to develop on Saturday in the eastern Gulf of Mexico, tracking from the Florida Peninsula on Sunday morning to Virginia Beach by Monday morning. Precipitation totals could reach at least 2 inches in many locations, with some areas possibly receiving around 3 inches. While the storm is linked to the effects of the strong El NiƱo climate pattern, it could soon end the drought currently experienced in the western region.
