Inside the left’s border backlash

A group of six senators is attempting to unlock President Biden’s $106 billion supplemental funding request for aid to Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. However, Republicans are insisting on tougher border security as their price for Ukraine aid, a shift in the traditional immigration-policy equation. The negotiations revolve around asylum standards, the expansion of safe third countries for asylum seekers, and the curtailing of presidential ‘parole’ authority for temporary admittance of people into the U.S. Critics are concerned that necessary developments in immigration reform are being sidelined in favor of foreign aid priorities. House Republicans continue to push for a more restrictive bill, H.R. 2, while Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer aims for a vote on the Biden aid package by next week.
