Derek Chauvin Attacked in Arizona Prison

Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted in the killing of George Floyd, was reportedly stabbed approximately 22 times by an inmate in an Arizona prison, as per court documents. The assailant, identified as John Turscak, 52, had allegedly been contemplating the attack for around a month.

The federal complaint reveals that on November 24, around 12:30 p.m. local time, Chauvin was in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson when Turscak attacked him, causing serious bodily injury. “Federal corrections officers immediately responded and deployed OC spray to subdue Turscak,” the complaint added.

Turscak, now facing attempted murder charges, told the corrections officers he would have killed Chauvin had they not intervened so quickly, as stated in the complaint. The prisoner also claimed his assault on Chauvin during Black Friday was symbolic with the Black Lives Matter movement and the “Black Hand” symbol, associated with the Mexican Mafia criminal organization.

In addition to attempted murder, Turscak has been charged with assault with intent to commit murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. Each of these offenses carries severe penalties, including 20 years’ incarceration for attempted murder and assault with intent to commit murder charges, and 10 years’ for assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury infractions.

Derek Chauvin’s Convictions

Chauvin is currently serving concurrent sentences for Floyd’s 2020 murder. He was convicted in April 2021 for second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter, receiving a 22-and-a-half-year sentence. The former Minneapolis police officer also pleaded guilty months later to federal charges of depriving Floyd of his civil rights and was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

On May 25, 2020, Chauvin, who is White, knelt on Floyd’s neck and back for more than nine minutes, suspecting Floyd used a counterfeit $20 at a Minneapolis store. Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, was handcuffed and lying face down on a street, pleading he couldn’t breathe. His death sparked nationwide protests over racial injustice and police treatment of people of color.

The Minnesota Department of Human Rights revealed that the city and its police department engaged in “a pattern or practice of race discrimination,” according to a 2022 report.
