Indianapolis police chief Randal Taylor is stepping down

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Chief Randal Taylor will step down by end of the year after 36 years of service, including four as the city’s chief of police. Throughout his career, Taylor implemented a body camera program, created a civilian-majority Use of Force and General Orders Boards, and revamped the department’s use-of-force guidelines. However, his tenure was also marked with criticism due to increased police shootings, particularly against people with mental illnesses. Plans for an interim chief have yet to be announced, and Taylor’s potential involvement with the department may encompass working with victims’ families.
