Indian official plotted to assassinate Sikh separatist leader, US says

U.S. prosecutors have announced charges against an Indian government official and a man named Nikhil Gupta over a foiled plot to assassinate New York-based Sikh separatist leader Gurpatwant Singh Pannun. The DEA uncovered the plot in the spring and set up a sting operation. Gupta was recruited by an unidentified Indian government employee, who provided Pannun’s details to the suspect. Gupta then contacted an associate to find a hitman, who turned out to be a confidential DEA source. The charges are the second recent accusations of complicity by Indian government officials in attempts to kill Sikh separatist figures in North America.
