In Tucker Carlson interview, Putin urges US to push Ukraine to talks

In an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, Russian President Vladimir Putin urged the US to recognize Moscow’s interests and persuade Ukraine to engage in talks. Putin also suggested a prisoner exchange to release Wall Street Journal’s reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was detained in March 2021 on espionage charges that he denies. The interview, Putin’s first with a Western media figure since his invasion of Ukraine two years ago, primarily focused on the situation in Ukraine with Putin defending Russia’s actions as necessary to protect Russian speakers in Ukraine. Putin also expressed openness to negotiations and accused the West of not being able to inflict a “strategic defeat” on Russia in Ukraine. He denied plans to attack Poland or other NATO countries.
