In ‘Emerald City,’ Dorothy is queen

Marina Ross’s exhibition “Emerald City” delves into the world of Oz, exploring themes such as longing and post-pandemic desire to return “home”. The Chicago artist creates a sense of longing and dreaming, with re-imagined depictions of elements from the Wizard of Oz that are both unsettling and intriguing. Amidst the grandeur and decadence of the Emerald City, character portraits and representations of Dorothy’s farmhouse, Ross portrays a not-so-utopian image, evoking feelings of anxiety. Ross’s work touches on elements of mental health, trauma, and the construction of narratives, encouraging viewers to join her in exploring the complications that arise from these themes.
