Impeachment inquiry threatens Biden with election-year headache

The US House of Representatives has voted to formalise an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, alleging that he benefited from his family’s foreign business dealings. This action gives the investigating committees more power to subpoena documents and testimony. This is the first step towards impeachment and with three out the four previous times this step was taken, the chamber ultimately opted to impeach. If the House Republicans push for impeachment in early 2024, the matter will then move on to the Democratic-controlled Senate, where a two-thirds majority is required to convict and remove a president. It’s worth noting that this majority has never been reached for a US president in history.
