How technology is helping detect drugs in Cook County Jail

The Cook County Sheriff’s office has reportedly made progress in combating drug smuggling and overdoses in the county jail. Sheriff Tom Dart credits new rigorous methods such as using K-9 units and x-ray technology to inspect incoming mail, which has been used as a vehicle for smuggling substances like pesticides and synthetic opioids like Fentanyl. The jail has also trained a 60-person team to monitor live video footage from within the facility, enabling immediate response to incidents. These measures have seen the number of suspected overdoses drop from 21 in February 2023 to just two in January 2024.
