The RichSoles Sneaker Shop in Houston, owned by friends Jamicah Taylor-Knight and Larry Rohelia, was robbed just days before its official opening, with the thieves making away with around $20,000 worth of merchandise. The owners had installed security cameras and an ADT alarm system, but the Houston police did not respond as the business did not have a permit for the alarm. Houston requires permits for both residential and non-residential alarms due to the city’s 96% false alarm rate, to better manage police resources. Without a permit, even legitimate alarms will not receive a police response, and the alarm owner may be fined.
