Houston ISD board gives ‘District of Innovation’ dedication final stamp of approval – Houston Public Media

The Board of Managers of the Houston Independent School District (HISD), one of the largest school districts in Texas, unanimously voted to make HISD a District of Innovation. This allows the district to be exempt from certain state education laws. The decision paves the way for potential changes including hiring uncertified teachers and extending the school year calendar. The plan was previously approved by a 61-member District Advisory Committee, composed of parents, teachers, and community members. However, the Houston Federation of Teachers opposed the move, calling it a “misuse of public trust.”
