Houston cancer cluster news: City Council to vote on relocation
The Houston City Council is set to vote on a voluntary relocation plan for families living near a cancer cluster in the city’s Fifth Ward. About 40 families are eligible for this program, but only nine have opted in so far. These families live near a railyard on Liberty Road where a known contaminant called creosote was used, resulting in higher rates of respiratory cancers. The council has earmarked $5 million for the Fifth Ward Voluntary Relocation Program, with a potential allocation of $2 million for the Houston Land Bank to purchase or build new homes. Residents still have questions about the plan, as they await new testing results about the level of soil contamination in the area.
