House Speaker Johnson wants to blur January 6 footage to protect Capitol rioters

House Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the faces of the mob involved in the US Capitol attack on January 6, 2021, will be blurred in the publicly released footage to protect them from potential prosecution by the Justice Department. Johnson stated that he wants to prevent retaliation against individuals who participated in the events of that day. However, blurring faces could hinder additional public tips that have helped to identify individuals from images taken during the riot. Federal investigators and prosecutors already have access to unedited footage and have used it to charge and prosecute mob members. Johnson previously promised to release 44,000 hours of Capitol Hill security footage from January 6, 2021, uncensored.
