House Plan to Vote on Extension of Disputed Surveillance Law Collapses
The US House has postponed votes on plans to reform the expiring Section 702 surveillance law due to disagreements among Republicans. The law, which allows warrantless surveillance of foreigners and sometimes the collection of American citizens’ private messages, was due to be renewed and limited. Two proposed bills to overhaul the law have led to intense debates among lawmakers. Progressives and former President Trump’s allies support a Judiciary Committee bill that would considerably curtail the law and enhance privacy rights for Americans, while centrists and national security hawks back an Intelligence Committee bill proposing more modest changes. Disputes among Republicans have resulted in a delay of the House vote on both measures.
