House passes expanded child tax credit with Gwen Moore in opposition
Milwaukee Representative Gwen Moore has voted against an $80 billion tax package that aimed to expand the child tax credit, because it did not sufficiently help the poorest families. Despite Moore’s opposition, the package passed the chamber by 357 votes to 70 and is now awaiting Senate approval. The bill, which was negotiated by Missouri Republican Rep. Jason Smith and Oregon Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden, aims to expand the child tax credit over the next three years to millions of children living in poverty. However, it falls short of the one-year child tax credit expansion enacted through the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. In addition, the bill faces criticism from both sides, with some Democrats claiming it does not go far enough to assist poor families, and Republicans arguing it disincentivizes work.
