Homelessness in New Mexico has increased by 48% in the past year
A man named Rabbit, who has been homeless for 26 years by choice, is profiled in this article. He is currently living near the Compassion Services Center in Albuquerque, run by Pastor Joanne Landry, which provides meals, clothing, and shelter to hundreds of people daily, mainly funded from donations and city funding. Rabbit, diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, builds bicycles and scooters for other homeless people, despite being in a wheelchair. He opposes the seizure and destruction of homeless people’s property, which was prohibited by a preliminary injunction issued by a Bernalillo County District Court Judge. Rabbit is passionate about changing perceptions of homelessness and is involved in two nonprofit organizations.
