Here’s where risk is highest
The peak of El Niño this winter is predicted to cause heavy snowfall, warm temperatures, and an elevated risk of flooding along the West and East Coasts, per NASA scientists. The West Coast could see more high tide flooding due to a greater than 55% chance of a strong El Niño. Unusually high tides, or “king tides,” could lead to as many as five significant flood events in cities like Seattle and San Diego. Additionally, the East Coast and areas in the Gulf might face more high-tide flooding due to El Niño-driven storms. States from Louisiana to the Carolinas are expected to experience above-average precipitation.
