Henry Kissinger, controversial statesman who influenced U.S. foreign policy for decades, has died

Henry Kissinger, a prominent diplomat who served as secretary of state and national security adviser under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, has died at the age of 100. Kissinger, who often practiced “realpolitik” to engage in foreign policies based on practical objectives, was known for his secret diplomacy with China and his role in the bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Born in Germany in 1923, he served the U.S. Army as a German interpreter and arrested Gestapo members before returning to the U.S., where he completed his doctorate at Harvard and joined the faculty. Kissinger remained an active voice in foreign policy discussions even after leaving the government in 1977.
