Heavy lake-effect snows continue to bury Upstate New York
The first major lake-effect snowstorm of the season has hit western New York state, Northern Michigan, northeast Ohio, and northwest Pennsylvania, resulting in heavy snowfall that exceeded 2½ feet in some areas. This is caused by frigid air passing over the Great Lakes. Western New York has been hit by heavy snow, reaching rates of up to 3 inches per hour, causing whiteout conditions and snow-related accidents. While most of the snow will likely melt by next week due to a predicted rise in temperatures, lake-effect-snow warnings remain in effect in several regions. Some of the highest snow totals include 23 inches in Constableville, N.Y., 16.5 inches in East Aurora, N.Y., and 13.3 inches in South Madison, Ohio.
