Hawaii Supreme Court quotes “The Wire” in ruling on gun rights: “The thing about the old days, they the old days”
Hawaii’s high court ruled that a man can be prosecuted for carrying a gun in public without a permit, in a decision that borrowed a quote from TV show “The Wire” and invoked “the spirit of Aloha”. The ruling is related to a case from 2017 where Christopher Wilson was found with a loaded pistol on a Maui property, a gun that was unregistered in Hawaii and for which Wilson didn’t have a permit. The court rejected Wilson’s argument that his prosecution violated his Second Amendment rights, noting that the culture and laws from the founding period of the country shouldn’t dictate contemporary life. The case might be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. The Hawaii Supreme Court ruling stands in contrast with a U.S. Supreme Court decision known as New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen, which upended gun laws nationwide.
