Hawaii governor calls for 3,000 vacation rentals to be converted to homes for Maui wildfire survivors and threatens to use the ‘hammer’ of post-fire emergency orders to force landlords who refuse
Hawaii Governor Josh Green plans to convert 3,000 short-term vacation rentals into long-term housing for wildfire evacuees still living in hotels four months after a deadly blaze. The governor said he will use emergency powers if the conversions aren’t done voluntarily by mid-January. There were 6,297 residents still living in hotels as of Thursday, while there are between 12,000 to 14,000 units legally rented on a short-term basis on Maui. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has offered to pay rent subsidies to such rental operators, while the Maui County Council is considering property tax breaks for owners.
