Harriet Tubman Coins Are Released by U.S. Mint

The U.S. Mint announced that three new commemorative coins bearing Harriet Tubman’s portrait are now available for pre-order. The coins—a gold $5, a silver dollar, and a half dollar—celebrate the bicentennial of the abolitionist’s birthday. The legislation to create these coins was introduced by Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Democrat of New York, during Black History Month in 2020 and was signed by President Biden in August 2022. Each coin has a surcharge added to its face value, and the proceeds will go to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center and the Harriet Tubman Home, Inc. While these coins are considered legal tender, they’re primarily intended as collectors’ items. The effort to replace Andrew Jackson’s portrait with Tubman’s on the $20 bill has been delayed for years, with a new note projected to be issued in 2030.
