Hard-right Republicans pressure Johnson to back out of bipartisan spending deal

Hard-right House Republicans recently met with Speaker Mike Johnson, pressuring him to back out of a spending deal he made with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer. Members of the far-right Freedom Caucus are upset about the $1.66 trillion bipartisan spending deal which aims to prevent a government shutdown. While some conservatives, like Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, believe a new deal will be drawn up, Johnson has made no commitments to back out of the existing arrangement. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries warns that if Johnson does renege on the deal, it would result in a harmful government shutdown. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer insists the Senate intends to follow through with the deal.
