Gusty winds topple National Christmas Tree near the White House
The National Christmas Tree was knocked down by strong winds on Tuesday, but the National Park Service remains hopeful for Thursday’s scheduled tree lighting. The tree, a 40-foot Norway spruce from the Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia, fell over due to gusts of up to 35mph. This year, the tree was placed in a park instead of being planted, breaking a tradition that has been held since 1973. This decision was made after last year’s planted tree developed a fungal disease. A crane can now be seen at the park in front of the White House, presumably to help with the tree’s restoration.
