Guard Dog In ‘Mutts’ Comic Strip Finally Unchained

The popular comic strip “Mutts” features a character called Guard Dog who has been chained up for years as a symbol of animal cruelty. Cartoonist Patrick McDonnell, who created the strip, has decided to free Guard Dog in a panel set to be published soon. McDonnell considered the dog a tragic character and used his story to highlight the inhumanity of dog chaining. The artist faced pressure from animal welfare groups to keep the character chained as a means of raising awareness about the issue. As of 2022, 23 states and the District of Columbia have laws regulating dog tethering or chaining.
