Groups begin canvassing for Bring Chicago Home referendum

The 50th Ward United Working Families are informing residents about the Bring Chicago Home movement, a referendum question proposing to fund support for Chicago’s homeless population through taxes on high-end property sales. The question will be presented on the March 19 ballot and will propose increasing the transfer tax on property sales worth over six figures to fund long-term financial support to combat homelessness. Critics, like the Neighborhood Building Owners Alliance, argue that the tax will confuse voters and negatively impact small and midsize investors, and have filed a lawsuit to prevent the question from appearing on the ballot. However, supporters view the tax as a necessary step to support Chicago’s most vulnerable residents.
