Greenbelt Chosen by GSA for New FBI Headquarters

  • The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has chosen Greenbelt, Prince George’s County, as the location for the new FBI headquarters after considering other potential sites in Maryland and Virginia. The choice was based on cost-effectiveness, transportation accessibility, and project delivery certainty.
  • FBI Director Christopher Wray has raised concerns over potential conflicts of interest and inconsistencies in the selection process. He shared that a board representing the GSA and FBI initially unanimously agreed on Springfield as the location, but a senior GSA executive, previously employed by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, owner of the selected Greenbelt site, made a rare decision to change course.
  • Despite these concerns, Maryland officials and representatives have celebrated the decision, highlighting the benefits it will bring in terms of job opportunities, business growth, and the improvement of FBI’s operational needs which have been undermined by the current dilapidated J. Edgar Hoover Building. They argue that the process was fair, transparent, and the right choice for taxpayers and equity.

Greenbelt Selected as New FBI Headquarters, Despite Controversy

The U.S. General Services Administration has chosen Greenbelt, Prince George’s County, as the location for the new FBI headquarters, a decision that has raised some concerns. This follows a lengthy evaluation of potential sites in Maryland and Virginia.

“GSA determined Greenbelt to be the best site because it was the lowest cost to taxpayers, provided the greatest transportation access to FBI employees and visitors and gave the government the most certainty on project delivery schedule,” said a GSA representative.

FBI Director Raises Concerns Over Selection Process

FBI Director Christopher Wray expressed concerns regarding a “potential conflict of interest” in the selection process, according to an email obtained by the Associated Press. Wray said his objections focused on the process, not the chosen site.

Despite these concerns, the GSA is eager to build a modern facility in Greenbelt, which is near a Metro station and a mall. “GSA looks forward to building the FBI a state-of-the-art headquarters campus in Greenbelt to advance their critical mission for years to come,” GSA Administrator Robin Carnahan stated.

Political Interference Claimed in FBI Headquarters Selection

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Virginia, alleged “gross political interference in an established GSA process,” while White House deputy press secretary Olivia Dalton defended the process. “I can tell you it was a fair and transparent process,” Dalton said. “The Greenbelt area is both cost-effective, has ample transportation means for FBI employees, and offers certainty about project start.”

Maryland Celebrates Potential Economic Boost from FBI Move

Maryland’s congressional delegation expressed excitement about the potential positive impact on the local economy. U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-District 5, said the suburban location is a better choice for the FBI’s long-term security. U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin and U.S. Sen. Chris Van Hollen both highlighted the potential job growth and boost to the Maryland economy.

Gov. Wes Moore praised the decision, stating it fulfills the FBI’s need for a new, consolidated headquarters. He said, “The once fabled J. Edgar Hoover Building has crumbled before our eyes… Today’s decision by the General Services Administration will ensure we fulfill the FBI’s dire, longstanding need for a new consolidated headquarters.”
