Governor pauses construction at Brighton Park migrant site after environmental report – NBC Chicago

Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker has halted construction for a migrant base camp in Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood after the release of an environmental report. The report highlighted soil contamination from mercury and other compounds at the site. Despite the pollution being cleared and disposed of, opposition to the camp remains from residents and environmental advocates due to its location and environmental concerns. The camp is meant to provide temporary housing for up to 2,000 migrants to prevent them from sleeping in airports and police stations during the winter. The city of Chicago had previously signed a $29 million contract with GardaWorld to construct the temporary structures.
