Former House speaker Kevin McCarthy announces he’s leaving Congress

U.S. Representative Kevin McCarthy is set to resign from office at the end of this month, significantly impacting House Republicans by further narrowing their slim majority. This development could make passing legislation in 2024 more challenging. McCarthy, who was ousted as the Speaker in the middle of a congressional term, announced his decision in an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal. His departure will occur before the special election to replace expelled Rep. George Santos, reducing the Republican majority to 220 as opposed to 213 Democrats. McCarthy’s decision has been expected since his removal as Speaker, but his early exit may cause additional problems for his party.
