Florida Republican voters could be key to push for abortion rights referendum | Florida

Advocates for abortion rights in Florida are pushing to include the right to abortion up to the point of a fetus’s viability (24 weeks) in the state constitution via a referendum in the next year’s election. Over 150,000 registered Republican voters have signed a petition calling for this constitutional amendment. To achieve this, almost 900,000 signatures from registered voters must be collected by the end of the month; so far, more than 1.3 million people have pledged their support. However, these efforts are met with resistance, including from Florida’s Republican governor Ron DeSantis, who has restricted access to abortions significantly in the past two years. Meanwhile, a University of North Florida poll found 62% of 716 registered voters would support the proposed constitutional amendment.
