Florida could adopt new solution to homeless crisis: camps

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has endorsed ‘House Bill 1365’ and ‘Senate Bill 1530’, a strategy proposed by Republican lawmakers to address homelessness by establishing designated camps. The legislation would require counties to prohibit homeless individuals from sleeping in public spaces and instead permit them to stay in secure camps that offer sanitation and behavioral health services. Critics argue the plan is a harsh approach that could lead to increased arrests of homeless individuals, while those in favor say it will help maintain public order and property values. The plan, which is dubbed the “Florida model,” has been backed by influential figures in Florida, including Ron Book, chairperson of the Miami-Dade Homeless Trust, and Rep. Sam Garrison.
