Firefighters face gusty winds, freezing temperatures while battling blaze at Merrillville apartment building

A fire broke out at an apartment building in Merrillville, Indiana, with gusty winds and cold temperatures complicating firefighting efforts. Fire crews were called to the scene in the 100 block of East 54th Avenue. One resident suffered from smoke inhalation, but the rest of the residents in the 24-unit building were evacuated without injury.
