Firefighters face gusty winds, freezing temperatures while battling blaze at Merrillville apartment building

A fire broke out at an apartment building in Merrillville, Indiana, with gusty winds and cold temperatures complicating firefighting efforts. Fire crews were called to the scene in the 100 block of East 54th Avenue. One resident suffered from smoke inhalation, but the rest of the residents in the 24-unit building were evacuated without injury. Firefighting efforts were hampered by a limited water supply and gusting winds helping the fire spread through “a void space”. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to help with relocation efforts, although it is unclear how many residents were displaced.
