Feds charge member of Md. Bd. of Elections with Jan. 6 crimes

Carlos Ayala, a Republican member of the Maryland State Board of Elections, has been arrested and charged by federal authorities for his alleged involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. Ayala, 52 of Salisbury, was charged with civil disorder and related misdemeanor offenses, leading to his resignation from the Board of Elections. Evidence against Ayala included video footage and a flag used during the riot that he was seen holding. The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia and the Department of Justice and is being investigated by the FBI’s Baltimore and Washington field offices.
