Federal Judge Dismisses Disney Lawsuit Against DeSantis
A federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed by the Walt Disney Company against Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. The lawsuit claimed that DeSantis violated the First Amendment by taking over a special tax district encompassing Walt Disney World. The company criticized an education law in Florida and DeSantis retaliated by taking over the tax district, ending Disney’s self-governance of Disney World. The judge found that the law giving DeSantis control of the tax district did not allow Disney to claim retaliation. Despite the ruling, Disney plans to appeal and argued that the case could set a dangerous precedent, allowing states to use their official powers to punish differing political viewpoints.
