Federal Judge Dismisses Counts In Lawsuit Against Trump, Rioters Over Death Of Capitol Police Officer

Federal Judge Amit Mehta dismissed two of five counts in a lawsuit against former President Donald Trump regarding the death of Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick during the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. The lawsuit, filed by Sicknick’s fiancée, Sandra Garza, alleged wrongful death and negligence, but Judge Mehta ruled that Garza didn’t have the standing to file such claims. While the wrongful death and negligence counts were dismissed, other claims against Trump are allowed to proceed under D.C.’s Survival Act. Trump is also facing a criminal case related to his actions leading up to the Jan. 6 riot.
